The Shield of Achilles – at Chatsworth

I came across this wonderful artefact yesterday while rubber-necking round Chatsworth in Derbyshire with my brother. The label says it is a copy of another shield – probably German I think, but I didn't make a note of the maker.

By the way, if you are studying this part of the Iliad you might like to read this Auden poem.
