The Romans were great, weren't they? Straight roads, fresh water on tap, and the chariots always ran on time.

And soon you'll have the chance to try your hand as a Roman city planner, thanks to HandyGames. The company is working on Glory Of The Roman Empire, a strategic simulation with a healthy amount of puzzle action included.

Based on an existing PC game, you start in the position of Curator Viarum and have to work your way up to Prokonsul by planning buildings and arranging your city to be as civilised as possible. Presumably this means no goths – which could equally well apply to modern town centres.

There are 22 different buildings to construct and randomly generated levels to keep the gameplay fresh. HandyGames reckons the game coins a new genre: 'build-up strategy puzzle'. With togas.

The game's due out in early August. Click 'Track It!' to keep up to date, no matter how far you're Roman in that time.

Roamin', geddit? No? Oh well then.
