Support for Classics in inner London schools and communities

Dear all,

As some of you know, The Iris Project is a registered educational
charity promoting Classics in state schools and inner city communities
through a variety of initiatives. We run Latin, ancient Greek and
Classical studies sessions in state schools, offer free classes in
city parks for local communities, and produce a termly magazine, Iris,
which is free to UK state schools which don’t offer Classics. We also
work in conjunction with UCL Department of Greek and Latin and King’s
College London Department of Classics to offer students the
opportunity to teach Latin and ancient theatre in inner London primary
and secondary state schools.

Due to the large interest from London primary and secondary schools in
these subjects, we are expanding our work to include many more London
state schools this year in the Latin sessions through literacy and
after school clubs. We are also expanding the theatre and Classical
civilisation workshops, and these will culminate in a new three-day
Classics festival for London state schools run by The Iris Project in
June 2009, which will focus especially upon schools in London’s most
deprived boroughs.

We are particularly looking for help with fundraising for these
projects, and are also seeking enthusiastic, committed Latin teachers
to run classes and clubs in London state schools. If you would like to
help with fundraising, teaching, offer a donation to these projects,
or would like to get involved in some other way, please get in touch
by contacting me at or through the website at

We are very grateful for all offers of help and support, and look
forward to hearing from anyone interesting in getting involved this
coming year.

Thanks and best wishes for the summer!
