Summer School update 1 – option groups

A lot more detail about the option groups at the ARLT Summer School in Uppingham School, from Monday 21st July to Saturday 26th July 2008.

Option Groups

  • A1. Virgil Aeneid XII OCR AS/A2 Prescriptions, Pat Bunting.

    We shall look at the text primarily for pleasure but also with an eye on teaching the material. Plenty of time for discussion – reading aloud optional! – as we investigate in detail the three best bits.

  • A2. Brush up your Greek, Helen Morrison
  • A3. A level Latin language teaching, Hilary Coote.

    How to consolidate and enhance the progress of your pupils from GCSE to A Level/Pre U. We will discuss teaching and learning methods for all aspects of the language papers, and how to integrate this work into preparation for the literature papers.

  • A4. Latin for years 6, 7 and 8, Linda Soames.

    We shall look at the courses and resources available for pupils starting off in Latin, at ways of engaging younger pupils' attention and motivating them to want to choose Latin as an option higher up the school. The emphasis will be on sharing ideas and experiences and finding practical solutions to problems.

  • B1. Catullus, Sarah Bourne.

    Do you remember why we chose to study Classics? Not because the book is on a syllabus, but because we appreciate good literature which has lasted 2000 years. We shall look at our favourite poems and talk about them! Come with a text and be prepared to contribute your ideas.

  • B2. Gifted and Talented Learning Styles, Allison Caplan.

    These workshops will begin by looking at practical learning styles for Visual, Aural and Kinaesthetic learners and the role of emotional intelligence in the classroom. Following on from this the workshops will look at the specific needs of Gifted and Talented students with a focus on teaching styles.

  • B3. Teaching Literature AS and A2 Classical Civilisation, Andy Swithinbank.

    A discussion group in which different approaches to the reading, analysis, discussion and revision of literary modules in Classical Civilisation will be analysed. The focus of the group is on stimulating discussion on novel approaches and good practice.

  • B4. Latin GCSE set texts 2009, Jude Morton.

    The main focus will be on the CLA prose selections and Aeneid VI, covering teaching approaches and exam-style questions for both verse and prose.

  • B5. Read It Right! – practical Latin pronunciation, Wilf O'Neill.

    A workshop on how to read accurately. The emphasis will be on practice, with perhaps a little theory, and there will be the opportunity – though no compulsion! – to read aloud. Notes and reading material will be provided. .

  • C1. Aeneid VI; Aeneas in the Underworld, Geoffrey Osborne.

    We will begin at line 426, continuo auditae voces, and see how far we get. The main emphasis will be on the correct reading aloud of the text, but you will be free to discuss any matters relating to the text. Please bring a text with you (any edition).

  • C2. Classical Drama for the 9-12 age group, Sarah Parnaby.

    Offering and sharing ideas for bringing Classical stories to life through short performances; an opportunity to take part in a simple version of an epic tale.

  • D3. The Odyssey for AS Classical Civilisation. (AQA and OCR), Fiona Gow

    We shall deal with the practicalities of planning the year and making best use of lesson time. We shall also discuss key characters and themes, and how to help our students please the examiners. If you are new to teaching the Odyssey, your questions will be welcome; if you have taught it before, please bring material and ideas to share.

  • C4. Cambridge Latin Course Book 4, Hilary Walters.

    A discussion group to share ideas and materials on how to teach this book. Please bring any ideas you have to the sessions. Relatively new teachers will probably find this most useful, but experienced teachers are welcome to share their expertise.

  • D1. Tackling Sallust for A2, Marian Ciuca.

    A discussion group concentrating on some of the passages from the de coniuratione Catilinae, investigating its historical background, language and grammar, style and Sallust's literary influence. Please bring your own text and translation.

  • D2. Classroom games, Lynda Goss.

    A variety of games suitable for Latin and/or Class. Civ. students from beginners to A2 will be explained and played. Participants will have the opportunity to share any games they play in their own schools. NB If you've attended this group before, there will be some new games.

  • D3. Latin prose composition, Robert West

    In this group we shall share ideas on how to prepare pupils for the A2 prose composition option (apparently continuing in the new specification) and also for the AS English into Latin sentences option (the first coming in 2009). We might spend more time on the second. We shall look at how to approach this work, which textbooks might be useful, and perhaps at particular areas if we feel we want to. We shall do exercises ourselves, and try to spot some (deliberate!) mistakes made by the Group Leader.

  • D4. Reading Greek – Euripides, Laura Beech.

    This is for anyone who would like to read some Greek for personal enjoyment, and perhaps to look afresh at plays well known through the teaching of Classical Civilisation. There will be selections from well known plays eg. Medea, Bacchae and perhaps Trojan Women. Lexical help will be provided.
