Obituary of aLatinist – in Latin

From Brian Bishop.

You might like to make use of the following concerning the death of Dr.
Caelestis Eichenseer: an obituary I wrote and one written by another
Latinist. Although not well known in this country, he was extremely
influential in Latin gatherings and publications on the Continent.

======================

Pater Caelestis Eichenseer (vulgo Joseph Anton Eichenseer), 1 Iulii 1924 – 4
Februarii 2008, monachus Benedictinus et theologiae doctor.

Quam strenue, quam accurate, quam acre ille Caelestis, nunc caelicola,
linguae latinae ipsius et in primis vivae investigationem, explanationem,
institutionem exerceret, alii singulatim tractent.

Erat assiduissimus: edebat commentarium periodicum c.t. 'Vox Latina' quater
latinas.

Mihi illius memoria erit oculorum perforantium: me mirabatur sicut
cogitationes videbat, expectans patienter donec eas latine balbutirem.
Erit vocis harenosae: verba fluebant multa uberrima ferentia sicut undae
litus lambebant. Erit subrisus petulci et amici: volebat colludere mecum,
etiamsi nolebam, etiamsi me ludificere sicut catulus videbatur. Semper
nihilominus omnis sciebat se — dicam ego sciebam me — in doctissimi,
studiosissimi, candidissimi praesentia forte fortunate fortiter inveniri.

Quae memoria felix, diuturna, laeta mihi!
